"The Voice"
A Short Screenplay by Chris McCaleb
FADE IN:
A MOVING TRAIN
A woman is looking wistfully out of the window
as the train moves along, minding her own business.
VOICE
(echoing, spooky)
David... you must kill them. Kill ALL of them.
The woman looks around, and sees no one. She
goes back to staring out the window.
VOICE (cont.)
They're no damn good, not a one of them. They don't deserve to live, David...
She looks back, at the other passengers. No
one seems to have said it.
A LONELY STREET
Later. She's walking home.
VOICE (cont.)
How much longer, David? How much longer until you take the knife and do what you must?
She whirls around.
WOMAN
HELLO?
THE WOMAN'S APARTMENT
Later. She's at home, eating a TV dinner.
VOICE
You can ignore me if you WANT, David, but I'm not going away...
WOMAN
Who IS this?
VOICE
Hahhahaha...
WOMAN
Where ARE you?
THE WOMAN'S BEDROOM
Later. She is lying in bed, but she isn’t
sleeping.
VOICE
David, David, David... we BOTH know it's time to take the knife, and do what must be done.
WOMAN
GOD! Who IS this? Where ARE you?
VOICE
HAHahahhaha. YOU know, David. I am INSIDE you! I AM you! HAHAHahaha!
WOMAN
Who's David? I don't know any David!
VOICE
HAHAhahahahhaha - what? What's that?
WOMAN
I said I don't know any David!
VOICE
Wh... Um, this isn't David?
WOMAN
NO!
VOICE
David Jenkins? 2467 North Clark Street?
WOMAN
NO! Do I LOOK like a David?
VOICE
(After a long pause) Sorry.
